If you like to sing then Memorial’s campus is the place to be this summer. Starting on Thursday, June 30, and running until Sunday, July 3, MemorialUniversitywill host The Phenomenon of Singing: International Symposium V. This event is an integral component of the Festival 500: Sharing the Voices celebration which runs from July 3-10 in St. John’s.
The symposium, sponsored by Memorial Universityand under the guidance of co-directors Dr. Andrea Rose and Ki Adams (Faculty of Education), will gather together clinicians and performers from all over the world along with international experts in the field of singing. Featuring eighty presentations from places as diverse as Argentina, Australia, Congo, Finland, Hong Kong, Lebanonand so many more, it will be a forum like no other focusing on interdisciplinary discourse, performance and the sharing of research. Presentations will be given in a variety of formats including papers, lecture-recitals, lecture-demonstrations, panel and roundtable discussions, cameo recitals and an interactive two-hour broadband multipoint video-conference choral session with choirs in Calgary, Ontario and Nova Scotia conducted by internationally renowned Venezuelan conductor, Maria Guinand on Canada Day. There will also be a special interest day for music educators on Saturday, July 2.
“One of the most truly unique aspects of this symposium and festival is its celebration of diversity and interdisciplinary sharing,” said Dr. Andrea Rose, Faculty of Education. “Scholars and performers come from around the globe to share their research, performance practices and pedagogies related to singing. This integration of theory and practice and fusion of discipline-based scholarship and performance practices - this type of sharing of voices - is one of the main philosophical tenets of the entire Festival 500.”
A special sub-theme of the symposium and choral festival will be a celebration of Latin America’s contribution to the singing world, with special guest performers De Boca En Boca, a Grammy-nominated quartet of female vocalists from Argentina. They will perform at a special cameo concert at Bianca’s restaurant on Water Streeton Sunday, July 3, as well as at the festival grand opening ceremonies on July 3 at 3 p.m.in the Field House.
There will be six invited keynote speakers including Catherine Robbin, one of Canada’s best known mezzo sopranos who will deliver the keynote address on June 30; Jocelyne Guilbaut, a leading authority on the traditional and contemporary music of the Caribbean; Maria Guinard, internationally renowned conductor, university professor and leader of many choral projects both nationally and internationally; Martin Bernheimer, chief music and dance critic of the Los Angeles Times for 31 years and now New York music correspondent for the Financial Times of London and Opera magazine; Peggy Bennett, director of the early childhood music play program at Oberlin College Conservatory in Ohio; and Serge Lacasse, teacher of popular music theory and history at Laval University in Quebec and the French editor of the Canadian University Music Review.
Members of the public and the university community are invited to attend all symposium events held in the Schoolof Music. There is a day rate of $95, a session rate of $20 and a full registration rate of $225. For more information, visit www.festival500.com.

Susan Knight. Opening ceremonies for the festival will start at 3 p.m.in the Field House with an opening concert that evening at the Arts and Culture Centre. Each afternoon and evening throughout the duration of the festival there will be Notable Lunch concerts around the city, Concerts in the Afternoon, and World of Music concerts each evening held at the Arts and Culture Centre, Gower St.and St. Mary’s churches.
Wednesday, July 6, will feature a special concert, Fiesta 500!, which will celebrate Latin American choral music. The week long events lead up to the Grande Finale Gala Concert at Mile One Stadium on Sunday, July 10. Festival 500: Sharing the Voices began in 1997 with the Cabot 500 celebrations. Since then it has grown to become a unique human cultural event attracting choirs and scholars from all over the world to come and share in the celebration of singing.
