SUBJECT: SeaRose Collection showcases talents of fine arts students

Twenty fine arts students at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Memorial University of Newfoundland, will exhibit their best work as part of the SeaRose Collection.
The collection, to be launched on May 14, 2005 in partnership with Husky Energy, will be placed on display onboard the SeaRose Floating Production Storage and Offloading Vessel (FPSO) for the 12 to 15 year production life of the White Rose oil field.
In return for the art work, Husky Energy has established the Husky Energy SeaRose Travel Bursary, an annual travel grant of $2,000 for a fine arts student intending to study at Memorial University’s campus in Harlow. The grant will be awarded over the entire 15-year production of the White Rose oil field.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the students to have their work placed in an important collection at this stage in their career, and to have the opportunity to exhibit their work in their community,” said Candace Fulford, a visual arts student. “I think it’s great that people outside Sir Wilfred Grenfell College are interested in fine art, and what students are doing here. People are going to be looking at our work for a long time on the vessel, and we are very happy that they want our art to look at.”
The 20 art works that form the SeaRose Collection were selected by a jury consisting of Heather Lau, vessel sponsor of the SeaRose FPSO; Fabian Mulroney, SeaRose FPSO marine superintendent; Barb Hunt, visual arts professor at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College and project co-ordinator; Gail Tuttle, exhibition curator; and fine arts students Kenneth Butler and Candace Fulford.
“Husky is proud to support the communities where we do business,” said Dr. John C.S. Lau, president and CEO of Husky Energy. “The SeaRose Collection gives an important showcase for Newfoundland and Labrador students to have their work publicly viewed. We are pleased to have had an opportunity to work with Memorial University and the students of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College on this project.”
The exhibition of student work is open to the public on May 14 at Humber Valley Resort’s Eagle’s Perch Clubhouse from 2-4 p.m.and on May 15 from 12-4 p.m.
“The college community is extremely grateful for the very generous support being offered by Husky Energy and Dr. and Mrs. Lau,” added Dr. John Ashton, principal of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. “This initiative is an important acknowledgement and endorsement of the fine work being undertaken by both students and faculty in our Schoolof Fine Arts. We hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership.”
Memorial University President Axel Meisen congratulates the students, faculty and Husky Energy on the successful realization of the project. “The SeaRose Collection brings together the worlds of art and industry in a unique way that is both visionary and practical. The students’ work will be promoted widely and the SeaRose crew will be inspired by the art of the students,” Dr. Meisen noted. “Creating the art and mounting this delightful exhibition has been very rewarding for all participants.”
Husky Energy operates and has a 72.5 percent ownership interest in the White Rose development on Canada’s east coast. The White Rose field is located 350 kilometres east of St. John’s on the eastern margin of the Jeanne d’Arc Basin. Memorial, through its Oil and Gas Development Partnership established in 2000, is positioning the university and the provinceof Newfoundland and Labrador as a leading centre of oil and gas expertise, with a special focus on operations in harsh environments. In partnership with private and public organizations in Canada and abroad, Memorial is building upon internationally acclaimed work in earth sciences, geophysics and ocean engineering to expand its educational and research offerings for the petroleum industry. The university has created new programs — such as the executive-level master’s program in oil and gas studies — recruited new faculty with diverse industrial and academic experience, created six new research chairs in oil and gas research, undertaken oil and gas educational outreach activities, and secured substantial targeted research funds for this centre of excellence.
