SUBJECT: Memorial University to sponsor public forum on Fisheries Policy and Rural Revitalization

Memorial University will hold a public forum on the Newfoundland and Labrador fishing industry at Hampton Hall, Marine Institute, 155 Ridge Road, on Thursday, May 26, 2005, 8–10 p.m. Fisheries Policy and Rural Revitalization: An Integrated Approach will explore the development of the fishing industry as key to the economic restoration of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. An expert panel will discuss the merits of integrating economic development, fisheries management, public policy and program delivery for rural revitalization.

The centerpiece of the forum is a presentation by Alastair O’Rielly, managing director, Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation. A panel discussion will follow the presentation and will feature economist, Dr. Doug May, sociologist Dr. Barbara Neis and Bernard Bromley, treasurer of the St. Anthony and area Chamber of Commerce, president of area’s Food Sharing Association and vice-chairman of the newly-appointed Newfoundland and Labrador Fish Processing Licensing Board.

The forum will be moderated by Dr. Robert Greenwood, director of Memorial’s Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development.

The public is invited to attend this forum and there is no admission charge. Free parking is available.
