SUBJECT: Marine Institute completes its first class of firefighters in Stephenville

The first firefighting class to train at the Marine Institute’s Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre in Stephenville will hold their First Run ceremony on Thursday, April 21, 2005.

The First Run ceremony marks the completion of the firefighters’ studies before they start their work terms. The event will begin with a ceremony and reception for students and families at the Holiday Inn from 2-4 p.m.This will be followed by a night exercise starting at 6:30 p.m. at the SERT Centre. Firefighting students will demonstrate their skills in a number of exercises including fire response, confined space entry and rescue, high angle rescue, vehicle extrication, and Hazmat. Members of the public are invited to attend.

The Marine Institute expanded the SERT Centre in Stephenville in January 2005 to offer its Firefighting and Recruitment certificate program. The 26-week program prepares graduates, through classroom and practical training and certification, to work with municipal and industrial fire departments.
