SUBJECT: Henrietta Harvey Distinguished Lecturers Series to feature author and visual artist

Author Lawrence J. Taylor and visual artist Maeve Hickey will present this fall's Henrietta Harvey Distinguished Lecturers Series. Dr. Taylor, head of the Department of Anthropology at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, is one of the most prominent anthropologists working in the fields of Irish/European Studies, the anthropology of religion, comparative studies of death, social science research on pilgrimage, Roman Catholicism, border studies, and visual anthropology. His books include Dutchmen on the Bay: The Ethnohistory of a Contractual Community (1983) and Occasions of Faith: An Anthropology of Irish Catholics (1995).
Together with his research collaborator, photographer Maeve Hickey, he has recently published three of the most striking books in border studies to appear in the last few decades: The Road to Mexico (1997), Tunnel Kids (2001), and Ambos Nogales: Intimate Portraits of the US/Mexico Border (2002).
Dr. Taylor will present a lecture titled Crisis of Faith or Collapse of Empire: The Current State of Irish Catholicism on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m.in room SN-2109 located in the Science Building on Memorial’s St. John’scampus. He will also lead a seminar titled An American Pilgrimage: The Tohono O'odham Walk through Mexico, on Friday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m. in room AA-1046, located in the Arts and Administration Building on the St. John’s campus.
Maeve Hickey will present her work in an exhibit titled Magdalena: Desert Pilgrimage at the Leyton Gallery of Fine Art, Baird's Cove in St. John's, opening Saturday, Sept. 18, from 3-5 p.m.
