SUBJECT: Business student discovers international trade and travel with Team Canada

Marystown native, Lindsey Hewitt is experiencing the trip of a lifetime for the second time. The bachelor of commerce (co-operative) student is one of two youth ambassadors participating in Team Canada’s Trade Mission to China from Jan. 18-25. She was selected to go after participating in Global Vision’s Junior Team Canada Economic Mission to Chinathis past summer.
“I have a strong interest in international business because I really want to travel,” Ms. Hewitt said. “I am really interested in education and finance and I hope to learn more about those two sectors so it seemed like a logical fit for me to try and be a part of a mission like this.”
Ms. Hewitt was chosen to attend the Junior Team Canada (JTC) mission from a pool of 600 applicants. She was then chosen from a pool of 35 JTC delegates to attend the current mission that will take her to Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong.
The mission will consist of seminars and conferences, hospitality events and networking opportunities designed to introduce participants to local leaders and Canadian business people active in the region with experience to share. In addition to conducting sectoral seminars and providing background information on local commercial conditions, officials from International Trade Canada and at the Canadian Embassy in China will work with the delegates to identify potential business partners.
“I’ve been able to learn some of the basics of the Chinese language and the business people really appreciate the effort,” she said. “I can say hello, thank you, and ask how much something is which comes in handy when shopping.”
“One of the most exciting parts of this mission is that I’ll be assigned a mentor,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to learning about business in Canada and China from someone with international business experience. I am also looking forward to talking to Chinese students about studying at Memorial. ”Ms. Hewitt first became involved with Global Vision’s Junior Team Canadain Grade 12 while attending Marystown Central High School in Marystown, NL. “I joined the program to strengthen my communication and business skills and I would strongly recommend other young people get involved.” The Global Vision training program is open to all youth aged 16-25.
