SUBJECT: Award-winning engineer improves our everyday technologies

Most people are oblivious to the phenomenon of heat transfer even though it’s as ubiquitous as gravity. Without advances in heat transfer technology, computers would be as large as refrigerators and cars would boil over after only a few miles of driving.
Dr. Yuri Muzychka’s research is the first step in thermo fluid examination and his work analyzes problems to maximize the performance of such things as computers, car engines and medical equipment. His research focuses on models which are aimed at channeling or removing heat and on the development of models for optimizing heat transfer systems in these ever-changing technologies. These models also contribute to the offshore oil and gas industry by improving applications such as two-phase flow in oil and gas pipelines, heat exchangers and process flows.
Dr. Muzychka, assistant professor of engineering, is the recipient of the 2004 Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award for MemorialUniversity. Petro-Canada and Memorial University recognized his accomplishments at an event held on the university’s St. John’s campus today.
Gordon Carrick, Petro-Canada’s vice-president east coast, sees the value that young scientists and engineers can bring to the oil and gas industry in Newfoundlandand Labrador. “Young innovators like Dr. Muzychka are contributing to our capabilities in research and development and applied science. This is an area that will have direct implications for the continued development of the oil and gas industry, and also for the province.”
Dr. Axel Meisen, president of Memorial University, says Dr. Muzychka’s research is an excellent example of Memorial’s dedication to applied research. “We are very pleased Dr. Muzychka received the Young Innovator Award,” Dr. Meisen said. “We are also encouraged knowing Petro-Canada provided the contribution that is driving forward Dr. Muzychka’s important research. We value Petro-Canada’s commitment to excellence in education in Newfoundlandand Labrador, and recognize the importance of the Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award as a step in helping the entire province grow through innovation.”
Petro-Canada is a strong supporter of Memorial University of Newfoundland in many faculties and research areas. The Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award Program was created in 1995 to recognize and help support the work of outstanding and innovative young faculty researchers at Canadian universities, colleges and major research institutes. The Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award was started at Memorial in 1998 as part of a $500,000 contribution to its Opportunity Fund campaign by Petro-Canada.
