Our Sociolinguistics series explores the relationship between language and society.

Language in Newfoundland and Labrador (LING 2210, no prerequisite) introduces sociolinguistic methods and ideas.

Language Variation (LING 3210) develops quantitative research skills and is usually taken in second year or higher (Prerequisite: LING 2210, or 3rd-year standing, or instructor permission).

Students then move on to Sociolinguistics (LING 4210/6210), a broader course for graduate students and advanced undergrads (Prerequisite: LING 3210, or 1103/2103, 2210 and 3104).

To prepare for Language and Gender (LING 3212, not offered every year), we recommend a course in either Linguistics ( 2210) or Women’s Studies (1000).
