Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Discipline of Oncology at Memorial University. Our work reflects the urgent need for cancer care and research in Newfoundland and Labrador, where one in two people will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. We are committed to improving the lives of patients and families through excellence in education, research, and evidence‑informed care, grounded in inclusion, equity, and Indigenous health.

Our faculty includes specialists in Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Family Medicine (General Practitioners in Oncology). Many are nationally and internationally recognized researchers, including the GSK Research Chair in Oncology. Most faculty are based at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre in St. John’s, with additional members cross‑appointed across Memorial University and at distributed sites in Gander, Corner Brook, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

Education is central to our mission. We train undergraduate and postgraduate learners supported by faculty who lead and innovate in medical education. Our Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited Medical Oncology Residency Program offers a high faculty‑to‑resident ratio and unique opportunities to train such as the peripheral clinic.

Research within the Discipline spans biomedical science, clinical trials, health services research, psychology, genetics, and social accountability. Our faculty work closely with patients and communities to ensure research addresses local needs and supports patient‑centred care. Notable is our participation in the Marathon of Hope pan‑Canadian research initiative with a goal to improve lives of our patients through personalized medicine.

Our faculty hold leadership roles across the university, health system, and national organizations, helping shape the future of oncology care, research, and education in our province.

We strive to foster a welcoming environment where respect, compassion, and inclusivity guide our work. Our vision includes advancing the health of diverse communities, including Indigenous Peoples, and adapting to emerging challenges such as the health impacts of climate change.
