Patient Oriented Research

NL SUPPORT

The Newfoundland and Labrador SUPPORT Unit (NL SUPPORT) is a multi-agency partnership between IBM, the CIHR, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Memorial University, and other agencies across the jurisdiction with a focus on Patient Oriented Research (POR). Broadly, POR is research that directly impacts patients, focuses on patient-identified priorities, and incorporates patients themselves as partners in research.

  • NL SUPPORT is available to support any research projects working within Newfoundland and Labrador that have a patient oriented focus.
    • Patients as subjects, or merely aiming to improve an outcome for patients can be considered POR, but orientation of a research program around patients requires engaging patients as partners in that research.
  • NL SUPPORT will work with researchers who require assistance in developing their engagement strategies.
  • Participation in a SPOR Network or the Translational and Personalized Medicine Initiative (TPMI) is not required, nor is funding. Depending on the level of support and expertise required, however, we may act as liaison between a research team and resources outside of NL SUPPORT; such outside resources may have their own requirements for cost recovery.

Financial support for graduate students involved in POR is available on a biannual basis via the TPMI Educational Funding competition; developmental funding for projects may be available via the NL SUPPORT POR Grants competition (dependent on funding).

If you have a project or research question for which you would like support, or even wish to discuss whether NL SUPPORT can give you a hand, contact Catherine Street (catherine.street@med.mun.ca).
