Teaching Dossier

Developing and maintaining a teaching dossier is highly recommended for all faculty members as documented effectiveness and scholarly competence as a teacher is required for promotion and tenure (see promotion and tenure section for more details). Clinical faculty members can also choose Scholarship of Education as their pillar of excellence.
For one-on-one consultations and additional support with teaching dossier preparation, contact Teaching Consultant Steve Shorlin at the Medical Education Scholarship Centre.

Teaching Dossier for Clinical Faculty

In collaboration with the Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS), the Medical Education Scholarship Centre in the Faculty of Medicine has developed a teaching dossier framework for clinical faculty members. This framework provides a suggested outline of a teaching dossier and detailed descriptions of the proposed sections and necessary appendices. It has been structed to reflect the promotion and tenure criteria for the Scholarship of Education (see promotion and tenure section for Scholarship of Education criteria).
Key points of teaching dossier framework:

  • The framework should be used as a basis to develop an individual teaching dossier.
  • While the framework identifies nearly all the items that can be included in a teaching dossier, content is not required for all sections.
  • Inclusion of formal teaching evaluations is voluntary and not a requirement for promotion and tenure.
  • The Statement of Teaching Philosophy document gives a guideline to writing the teaching philosophy section of the teaching dossier. Examples of teaching philosophy statements can be found on the DELTS website.

Teaching Dossier for Academic Staff Members (MUNFA)

Academic staff members (MUNFA) are advised to use the teaching dossier framework developed by the Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS) which is applicable to all faculty members at Memorial University. The framework provides a suggested outline of a teaching dossier and detailed descriptions of the proposed sections and necessary appendices. The DELTS framework is modeled after the Canadian Association of University Teachers' (CAUT) teaching dossier and should be used for promotion and tenure applications (see promotion and tenure section for more information).
