Personal Profile

C. Michael Wernerheim is Professor of Economics and former Chair of the Graduate Program in Economics at Memorial University of Newfoundland. I completed my undergraduate degree at Simon Fraser University, and hold a Ph.D. in Economics from Uppsala University (Sweden). Prior to joining the faculty at Memorial in 1988, I worked as a Research Associate with the Forest Economics and Policy Analysis Unit (FEPA) at the University of British Columbia. I have taught at the University of Tromsø (Norway), the University of Oulu (Finland), and the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon). My research interests are in the areas of industrial economics (service industries), and the economics of natural and environmental resources (fisheries, forestry and energy). I teach in these areas and in microeconomics at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Economics Department, and formerly at Memorial's Fisheries and Marine Institute. I received the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences Award for Teaching Excellence (2017). I am a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal on Business & Economic Development (IJBED). I currently serve as adviser to the Federal Government of Canada (Global Affairs Canada.)
