Maclean’s, a Canadian news magazine, provides an annual release of Canadian universities separated into three categories: primarily undergraduate, comprehensive, and medical/doctoral. Memorial University of Newfoundland is ranked in the comprehensive category.

Research Infosource Inc. is a Canadian research, consulting, and publishing firm, specializing in the areas of policy, research, business intelligence and analysis on science, technology, innovation. The annual ranking of Canada’s top 50 research universities uses the total research expenditures (reported by CAUBO) and faculty counts (reported by Statistics Canada). The main indicator is research funding per faculty member followed by research funding per graduate student.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU), Graduate School of Education (formerly the Institute of Higher Education) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and updated on an annual basis. Since 2009 the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been published and copyrighted by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university. More than 1800 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 are published.

Quacquarelli Symonds, a British company specializing in education and study abroad services, releases their ranking of universities in the world on an annual basis. They evaluate more than 5,500 universities from over 150 countries and provide rankings for roughly 1,000 institutions.

Times Higher Education is a weekly British magazine that reports specifically on news and issues related to higher education. THE ranking portfolio consists of four sets of rankings, with Memorial University participating directly in the World, Subject, and Impact Rankings. 2020-21 is the first year that Memorial is participating in the THE Impact rankings.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We use carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparison across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching. 2020-21 is the first year that Memorial is participating in the THE Impact rankings.

The Leiden Ranking provides information about the research done at universities, using data collected through advanced bibliometric data (Web of Science). This ranking is based on five fields and is presented in four indicators: scientific impact, collaboration, open-access publications, and gender diversity.
