Future Proof Strategy

Chinedu shows Newfoundland & Labrador's resource companies how to turn climate risks into opportunities - merging strategic insight with purposeful leadership.

Where are you from? What do you like about St. John’s or Newfoundland?

I’m from Nigeria, a country rich in culture, resilience, and innovation. Growing up in a vibrant and dynamic environment has shaped my perspective on the world, making me optimistic about the possibilities, even in the face of challenges.

St. John’s has been a transformative home for my family and me. I genuinely appreciate its blend of calm, character, and community. Newfoundland’s pace of life, natural beauty, and the kindness of its people make it an ideal place to reflect, grow, and raise a family. Having my first child here has made the province even more special, deepening my academic and personal journeys.

What do you enjoy doing for fun?

These days, my wife and I enjoy exploring parks and trails with our son, born in the winter of 2024. Parenthood has added a new layer of joy and meaning to my life. I also find fulfillment in acquiring new knowledge, organizing community events, and mentoring others. Whether participating in case competitions or presentations, I am energized by making a positive impact.

Why did you choose to pursue a graduate degree?

My diverse professional experiences underscore the significance of strategic leadership in driving meaningful change. Pursuing a graduate degree was a deliberate step to enhance my understanding of business dynamics and equip myself with the tools required for impactful leadership. This aligns with my long-term goal of pursuing a PhD in General Management.

Why did you choose Memorial for graduate studies?

Memorial University’s commitment to research excellence and community engagement resonated deeply with my aspirations. The MSc in General Management program offered a comprehensive curriculum and esteemed faculty, aligning with my career goals. The university’s supportive environment made it an ideal choice for me.

What is your thesis about? How do you describe your research to a general audience with no background in the field?

Under the supervision of Dr. Emmanuel Haven and Dr. Thomas Cooper, my research explores how corporations respond to climate risks, specifically within Newfoundland and Labrador’s resource sectors (energy & oil and tech & innovation).

In plain terms, I’m studying how companies adapt to climate challenges like rising regulations, severe weather, and shifting consumer expectations. The goal is to understand what works, what doesn’t, and how businesses can build a more resilient and sustainable future.

How would you describe your experience as a graduate student at Memorial?

I’ve grown academically, professionally, and personally through my roles as a Faculty Council representative, mentoring fellow students, and participating in conferences and research presentations. Memorial University has fostered leadership and empathy in me. Balancing grad school, fatherhood, and part-time work hasn’t been easy, but it’s been rewarding.

What scholarships or awards have you received?

I’m currently a recipient of the Canadian Beverage Association Graduate Business Scholarship and the Mitacs Business Strategy Internship, which I secured through the Centre for Social Enterprise at Memorial. These awards have provided financial support and platforms to apply my knowledge in real-world settings.

Have you faced any challenges in life that you’ve overcome to pursue graduate studies?

Yes, quite a few. Becoming a father during graduate school was a blessing and a test of balance, discipline, and adaptability. Coupled with navigating a new academic system, part-time work, leadership responsibilities, and earning my PMP certification this year, 2025 has stretched me in all the best ways. It took rigorous planning and perseverance, but it also proved that complex goals can be achieved with clarity of purpose and support.

What advice would you give to current or future graduate students?

Treat your graduate studies not just as a program but as a journey. Stay curious, ask bold questions, and take the time to build authentic relationships. When things get overwhelming, remember why you started. For me, it was never just about earning a degree; it was about becoming someone capable of contributing lasting value to society.
