Note for new WRSON 2021 applicants: As of recent, Memorial University has implemented a new application system. If you are choosing Grenfell campus on your application, you will not see nursing as an area of interest. You must first choose the St. John's campus. Students applying to the Bachelor of Nursing (Collaborative) Program from another post-secondary institution must meet the general admission/readmission requirements of Memorial University. The deadline to apply is February 1. 

Priority for admission is given to applicants who are residents of  Newfoundland and Labrador. However, out-of-province and international applicants are encouraged to apply. 

4-Year Option:

The courses required for admission are:

  • Biology 2201 and 3201, or equivalents
  • Chemistry 3202, or equivalent
  • Math 3200 or 3201, or equivalent

If both Grade 11 and Grade 12 Biology, Grade 12 Chemistry and Grade 12 Math have been successfully completed in high school, biology, chemistry and math courses do not have to be completed at the post-secondary level for admission into the Bachelor of Nursing (Collaborative) Program. Additional course options are available by completing equivalent courses to the non-nursing courses offered at Memorial University.

If you have not completed BOTH Grade 11 and Grade 12 biology courses in high school, you will have to complete two introductory biology courses at the post-secondary level. The biology courses are a pair and both must either be completed in high school OR at the post-secondary level. If you did not complete Grade 12 chemistry in high school, you will have to complete an introductory chemistry course at the post-secondary level. If you did not complete Grade 12 math in high school, you will have to complete an introductory math course at the post-secondary level.

Admission Averages:

Admission averages are calculated by comparing the student's average from the Fall semester at Memorial University in the year they applied to Nursing to the student's cumulative Memorial University average. The higher average of the two is then used for admission into the Bachelor of Nursing (Collaborative) Program. To be competitive for admission to the 4-Year Option, applicants should have a 70% average and higher from Either the average from their 4-5 Fall courses OR their cumulative post-secondary average. 


Accelerated Option 

A.) Required Courses:

1. Biology 2201 and 3201, or their equivalents
2. Chemistry 3202, or equivalent
3. Math 3200 or 3201, or equivalent

B.)A minimum of 60 credit hours at the university level, which must be completed by the end of the Winter semester in the year of applying.

The 60 credit hours at the university level must include 12 credit hours from the following list:

1. Six credit hours in a Critical Reading and Writing (CRW) designated courses in English
2. Three credit hours in Sociology, Anthropology or Archaeology
3. Psychology 1000, or equivalent
4. Biochemistry 1430, or equivalent
5. Biology 3053 (Microbiology), or equivalent
6. Statistics 2500, (or Statistics 1510, 2550, Education 2900, Psychology 2910, 2925)
7. Three credit hours in Philosophy, or Religious Studies 2610

C.) A minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale as either a cumulative GPA, degree GPA, or in the last 60 credit hours.

D.) A minimum of 12 credit hours per semester in two of the last six semesters.


Required Documents and Deadlines for Other Post-Secondary Students:

  • Personal statement: must be submitted on the nursing application
  • Proof of Indigenous Ancestry, if applicable
  • CASPer test: applicants do not need to submit the score of the CASPer test themselves, but must write the test by the last available testing date
  • Transcripts from other post-secondary institutions, official transcripts must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar

Transcripts:

Students applying to the 4-Year Option or to the Accelerated Option from a post-secondary institution other than Memorial University must provide a current official interim transcript by the application deadline. Students must also arrange to have all final official transcripts sent directly from the institution once the academic year is complete. Students must arrange to have transcripts sent directly to the Office of the Registrar, Memorial University.

Transfer Credits:

Transfer students applying to the 4-Year Option and to the Accelerated Option will have an automatic transfer credit evaluation completed (requested by the Nursing Admissions Office) once the admission application is received so as to determine if program admission requirements have been met.

For the 4-Year Option, only the required biology, math and chemistry courses along with the non-nursing courses will be evaluated for transfer credit. For the Accelerated Option, only the required courses for admission will be evaluated for transfer credit.

If students, who are admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing (Collaborative) Program, wish to investigate their transfer credits, they should contact the Transfer Credit Office at: transfer.credit@mun.ca.


Date for Required Courses to be Completed:

All required biology, chemistry and math courses for admission must be completed by July 31st. If courses will be outstanding, applicants should consult with and notify the Undergraduate Nursing Admissions Coordinator by emailing nursingadmissions@mun.ca


Admission Decisions:

Admission decisons should be emailed by the end of March to the applicant's MUNmail account and to their personal email account. To set up your MUNmail account, please follor the instructions here. Make sure to check the junk mail folder as the email may end up in that folder. 


Required Requisite Skills and Abilities for Nurse Practice:

Students who are thinking of a career in nursing should review the required Requisite Skills and Abilities to ensure they meet all of them as they are the required guidelines for nursing practice. All admitted students to the BN Program must meet the CRNNL Requisite Skills and Abilities for Entry-Level Registered Nurse Practice in order to continue with their acceptance.
