HFNL to host Agricultural Heritage Festival
For the past 3 years the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador has supported a local folklife festival in the province. The goal of the festival is to celebrate these otherwise unspoken traditions that may be taken for granted. This year’s theme has an agricultural focus. When we surveyed a couple of community groups in the greater St. John’s area, there was a large concern about the loss of agricultural knowledge and practices.

Events
This year we are coordinating events with a number of the groups in the Northeast Avalon area to promote the historical background of agriculture, and the contemporary movements that are active in the area. We wish to highlight the agri-culture that comes from the past but remains contemporary.

Description of event: Dandelion stew? Dogberry jelly? Todd Boland, the Botanical Garden’s Research Horticulturist will point out many culinary treasures hidden in our forest, fields and roadsides. Description of event: As part of the Art Marathon Festival this year, Eastern Edge is holding workshops to create a Moveable Art Garden, which will be part of FEASt’s Third Annual Open Garden Day on Sunday August 21. The workshops will be held on each day, and will involve painting and planting the moveable garden boxes. This is a free family event, and there will be a community BBQ held at Eastern Edge each day.

Description of event: Growing healthy plants, including our food, starts with healthy soil. At MUN Botanical Garden we make our own – with fabulous results. All organic material (anything produced by a living organism) is recycled through a combination of natural biological and chemical processes. When we compost, we utilize natural processes. This presentation will introduce the practical steps of starting composting, indoors and out. The indoor presentation will be followed by a short walk in the garden to view some compost bins.

Description: Recent studies have found elevated lead levels in the soil of St. John’s, particularly in the older parts of the city. St. John’s Safer Soil conducts education and capacity building activities to promote safe city gardening and recreation, given the questionable soil conditions found in many urban centres.
During the summer and fall of 2011, St. John’s Safer Soil will conduct garden tours at its demonstration garden behind the Gathering Place, which is situated at the north side of the Basilica parking lot. Topics include how to conduct soil testing for lead, how to grow food safely in urban areas, simple landscaping projects and other tips to prevent lead exposure, and other sustainable agricultural practices.
