Initiatives

The Office of the Vice-President (Advancement and External Relations) has responsibility for the following activities:

100th Anniversary
We have come a long way since Memorial University College first opened its doors on Parade Street in September 1925. For 100 years, Memorial has remained Newfoundland and Labrador’ university and has carried a special obligation to the people of this province. Established as a living memorial to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in war, Memorial honours the past by preparing each new generation for the future.

The centennial is an opportunity to reflect and remember, while also looking ahead - to the university we aspire to be, and to the future we want to help shape for Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond. Through signature events, storytelling, exhibits, and community gatherings, we are celebrating the impact of the past century and imagining the possibilities of the next.

Join us in marking this milestone - explore our events, share your stories, and be part of the celebrations.

Whale of a Day
Inspired by our blue whale skeleton, Whale of a Day open house unlocks the treasures of the deep under and around Altum, the blue whale whose skeleton hangs in Memorial University’s Core Science Facility (CSF). Altum (pronounced al-tum) is Latin for “deep,” and comes from Memorial’s motto: provehito in altum, which means “launch forth into the deep.” The whale represents the diverse ocean-related expertise that swims across our campuses.

Giving Tuesday
Each year, Memorial University participates in Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving. Since 2015, alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends have raised over $520,000, showing that, together, we make a real difference for our students!  For 2024, our Giving Tuesday champions matched up to $60,000 with donations being directed to the Thriving Student Fund.
