Dr. Wei Qiu, professor, Department of Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering, has been elected to become a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA).

RINA is a highly renowned professional institution and learned society, which exists to promote and serve the interests of both its members and the naval architectural engineering profession.

RINA's
members are involved at all levels in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of marine vessels and structures. They are internationally recognized as qualified experts and committed professionals, and widely represented in industry, universities and colleges and maritime organizations in over 90 countries.

Applicants
for election as a Fellow of the Institution must demonstrate that they made exceptional contributions to the profession and a record of superior achievements in their career. Applications are endorsed by two RINA members/Fellows and the membership committee assesses applicants on their achievements and accumulative contributions to the field and superior responsibility.

"I am honoured
to be elected as a Fellow of RINA,” said Dr. Qiu. “The recognition by my international peers is very rewarding and I am thrilled to have made the contributions to the marine and naval architectural field.”

Dr. Qiu joined Memorial in 2004. On Jan. 1, 2016, he will become the head of the Department of Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering. Prior to joining Memorial, Dr. Qiu worked as a senior hydrodynamicist and then as a product manager for seakeeping software.

He is also a Fellow and vice-president of The Scoeity of Naval Architect & Marine Engineers (SNAME), director of Memorial University's Ocean Engineering Research Centre (OERC) since 2008, chair of the International Towing Tank Conference's Ocean Engineering Committee, chair of the 34th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OMAE 2015) and associate editor of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering.

Dr. Qiu's research interests are in the area of marine hydrodynamics and its applications to ships and offshore structures. He specializes in solving fluid-structure interaction problems using experimental and numerical methods. Dr. Qiu has been involved in numerous projects with the marine and offshore industries, government agencies and private sectors.

"Congratulations to Dr. Qiu on this prestigious international honour," said Dr. Greg Naterer, dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. "This recognition by his peers highlights his important contributions to the fields of ocean and naval architectural engineering. He is very deserving of this international recognition."
