Our Department

Welcome to the Department of Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering (ONAE) at Memorial University.

MUN LMoro PicturePositioned on the edge of the North Atlantic, Memorial is Canada’s premier ocean engineering and naval architecture education centre.

Our students are immersed in a culture where engineering for marine environments matters. Newfoundland and Labrador is steeped in maritime tradition, and there are countless industries and research organizations focused on ocean and ship innovations. Memorial is at the heart of it all.

Our program will teach you to design and analyze systems for ships, marine structures and other technologies that operate in oceans. You’ll reap the benefits of small classes, informative hands-on laboratories, and approachable faculty who are here to help you make the most of your education. You will gain valuable work experience by completing up to six mandatory paid co-operative work term placements.

ONAE graduates have excellent reputations worldwide. They work in research, ship design and production, operations and certification, offshore industries, ocean instrumentation and environmental equipment.

I encourage you to learn about our department, staff and news on this website. There are specific sections for undergraduate, graduate and future students as well as information on our current research projects and facilities.

ONAE at Memorial is a gateway to exceptional learning opportunities and exciting career prospects in the field of ocean engineering and naval architecture. Applicants with a strong interest in ONAE are encouraged to apply through a new direct admission process.

Please feel free to contact me, or any faculty member, if you have questions or would like more information.
