Nursing students can apply for scholarships specific to the BN (Collaborative) Program, for Memorial University Scholarships which are outlined in the MUN Calendar, and for scholarships associated with the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL).

Western Integrated Health Authority Entrance Scholarships ($500.00 each)

Criteria: These awards are given annually in fall semester to the three BN (Collaborative) Program, Year I students who are the top ranked entry-level students at Western Regional School of Nursing. One award is given to a student who enters the program directly from high-school, one award is given to a student who has previously attended university who has scholarship standing, and one award is given to the Fast Track student with the highest average in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Statistics.

Eligible students: First year regular stream.

 

Mirdza Kajaks Entrance Scholarship

Criteria: This scholarship is given annually to a year 1 student who enters the program directly from high school, who is enrolled full time at Western Regional School of Nursing and plans to practice in Newfoundland and Labrador upon completion of studies. Candidates must apply in writing to the Undergraduate Studies Committee, indicating their school and community involvement and stating their future career plans. Candidates must have scholarship standing (75% average in grades received in secondary school courses required for university admission). Candidates must be recommended by the Director to the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships. Applications Due: Third day of classes, Fall semester

Skinner Memorial Entrance Scholarship

Criteria: This scholarship was established by a generous donation from the Estate of Edith and Robert Skinner. Robert Skinner (1920-2008) graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1953 with a degree in Education and taught in various communities on the Northern Peninsula and in Corner Brook. Edith Skinner (1922-2010) worked as a nurse until the late 1960s when she and Robert operated a motel in Pasadena, and later continued with tourism through hunting and fishing camps in Labrador. One entrance scholarship will be awarded annually to an undergraduate student entering full-time studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a scholarship as defined by the University, and must have graduated from a high school in western Newfoundland or Labrador (that is west of Grand Falls but including Labrador). Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need. This scholarship will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards.

 

The Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses' Union (NLNU)

Offers a number of scholarships to NLNU members and children of current or retired members completing nursing education. Up to $13,000 in scholarships is awarded each year. Scholarship criteria and general policies are contained in the scholarship application form which is available on NLNU's members-only website, myNLNU. This is a list of some of the scholarships available.  The main office at Western Regional School of Nursing will send information to students in the BN program every year to inform them of scholarships available and how to apply.

 

Elsevier Science (Mosby) Book Award for Clinical Performance with Distinction by a First Year Student

Criteria: Demonstrated overall clinical excellence, within top 5 students of NURS1520 as ranked by faculty for this course. A minimum academic average of 75% in all courses required for the program. Use overall program average as a tie breaker.

Nominations Due: Early April.

Eligible Students: Completed NURS1520, year 1 regular stream.

 

Western Heath Authority First Year Academic Award ($500.00)

Criteria: Highest average in nursing courses in year 1 of the regular stream. Courses to consider for average are: NURS1002, 1003, 1004, 1012, 1014, 1015, 1016, 1017.

 

Western Regional School of Nursing First Year Award (Plaque and Book) Regular Stream

Criteria: Highest program average in all 11 courses (31 credit hours) completed at MUN in year 1 of the regular stream. Awarded at SWGC Awards Ceremony in March.

 

Western Regional School of Nursing Year 1 Fast Track Award (Plaque & Book)

Criteria: Highest average in all 15 courses (43 credit hours) in year 1 of the fast track option. Awarded at SWGC Awards Ceremony in March.

 

Western Health Authority Second Year Academic Award ($500.00)

Criteria: Highest average in nursing courses in year 2 of the regular stream. Courses to consider for average are: NURS2002, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2502, 2514.

 

Pearson Education Canada (Appleton & Lange) Book Award for Excellence in the Care of Women & Childbearing Families

Criteria: A minimum academic average of 75 % in NURS2002. Demonstrated clinical excellence; within top 5 students of NURS2502 as ranked by NURS2502 faculty. Use overall program average as a tie breaker.

Eligible Students: Completed NURS2002 and NURS2502, year 2 regular stream.

Criteria: A minimum academic average of 75% in NURS3012. Demonstrated clinical excellence; within top 5 students of NURS3512 as ranked by NURS3512 faculty. Use overall program average as a tie breaker.

Elsevier Science (Saunders) Book Award for Excellence in Mental Health Nursing

Criteria: A minimum academic average of 75% in NURS3001. Demonstrated clinical excellence; within top 5 students of NURS3501 as ranked by NURS3501 faculty. Use overall program average as a tie breaker.

Eligible Students: Completed 3001 and 3501, year 3 regular stream and year 2 fast-track.

 

The Pearson Education Canada (Addison-Wesley) Book Award for Excellence in the Care of Middle and Older Adults

Criteria: A minimum academic average of 75% in NURS3111. Demonstrated clinical excellence; within top 5 students of NURS3511 as ranked by NURS3511 faculty. Use overall program average as a tie breaker.

Nominations Due: Early April.

Eligible Students: Completed NURS3111 and NURS3511, year 3 regular stream and year 2 fast- track.

 

The Salvation Army Grace Scholarship

Criteria: A minimum academic average of 75% in all courses required for the BN (Collaborative) Program completed by the end of winter semester year three. Provide proof of registration for NURS3523. Demonstrate on resume involvement in volunteer activities which help or aid those in need, and participation in Christian activities during enrollment in the program. Letter of recommendation from faculty in NURS3501 and in NURS3511.

Applications Due: Early April.

Eligible Students: Year 3 regular stream and year 2 fast-track.

 

The Janet P. Winsor Bursary

Criteria: Scholarship standing (75% average in 30 credits in the last 2 out of 3 semesters). Excellence in NURS3501 and NURS3511. Recommendation from clinical instructors in NURS3501 and NURS3511. Demonstrated financial need over and above academic excellence.

Nomination Due: Early April.

Eligible Students: Year 3 regular stream and year 2 fast-track.

 

Kristofer Waterman Award ($250.00)

Criteria: This award is presented to a third year nursing student who is recognized for his or her academic ability, clinical competence, extra-curricular involvement, and a variety of outside interests. A minimum academic average of 75% in all courses required for the BN (Collaborative) Program. Demonstrated clinical excellence in clinical courses completed to date. Demonstrated active leadership, interest and involvement in student life, and outside interests. Students are required to apply in writing to the Undergraduate Studies Committee indicating their interests and involvement in student life.

Applications Due: Early March.

Eligible Students: Year 3 nursing students in the regular stream.

 

Western Health Authority Third Year Academic Award ($500.00)

Criteria: Highest average in nursing courses in year 3 of the regular stream. Courses to consider for average are: NURS3001, 3104, 3111, 3113, 3501, 3511.

 

Western Health Authority Fourth Year Academic Award ($500.00)

Criteria: Highest average in nursing courses in year 4 of the regular stream. Courses to consider for average are: NURS4101, 4103, 4501.

 

Clinical Proficiency Award ($250.00 Medical Association Western Memorial Regional Hospital)

Criteria: This award is given to a top ranked graduate who has consistently demonstrated sound theoretical competency and clinical performance with distinction throughout the program. Clinical faculty will provide a short list of their five top ranked students per course offering. These clinical course rankings in conjunction with academic averages will be used by the Undergraduate Studies Committee to determine the award winner.

Nominations Due: Early April.

Eligible Students: Graduating students in May and previous October.

 

Western Health Authority Graduate Academic Awards ($500.00 each)

Highest academic average in all the courses required for the regular stream. Highest academic average in all the courses required for the fast track option. Fitzgerald Award ($250.00)

Criteria: This award is given to a top ranked graduate who has consistently demonstrated sound theoretical competency and clinical performance with distinction in gerontological nursing throughout the four years of the program. Clinical faculty involved in gerontological nursing will provide a short list of their five top ranked students. Courses to be considered are: NURS1520, 3511, 3523, 4514.

Nominations Due: Early April.

Eligible Students: Graduating students in the regular stream.

 

Western Memorial Regional Hospital Auxiliary Award ($150.00)

This award is voted on by the graduating students. It is awarded to the classmate who has shown the most leadership in student affairs through volunteer activities.

Be nominated for this award by: the graduating class and/or the Nursing Society and/or CNSA delegate(s). The nomination must be supported by a statement or documentation of the nominee's history of involvement in activities such as graduation committee, Nursing Society, and CNSA or similar organizations in which the student is able to demonstrate his/her emerging leadership role as a member of the profession.

Nominations Due: Middle of November.

Eligible Students: Graduating students in the regular stream.

 

Raymond Tipple Memorial Scholarship ($250.00)

Criteria: This award is given to a member of the graduating class who intends to pursue studies in Oncology Nursing. Candidates must apply in writing to the Undergraduate Studies Committee stating their intentions regarding future studies and why they are interested in this specialty. A minimum academic average of 75% in all courses required for the program. Demonstrated clinical excellence. Proof of registration in a program, within 3 years of graduation, must be submitted to the Director before the funds will be awarded.

Applications Due: Middle of March

Eligible Students: Graduating students in May and previous October.

 

Department of Health & Community Services Scholarship in Nursing Leadership ($500.00)

Criteria: Scholarship standing (75% average in 30 credits in the last 2 out of 3 semesters). Excellence in year 4 theory and clinical courses. Excellence in clinical practice must be supported by a letter of recommendation from faculty. Emphasis on nursing leadership, excellence in 3113 (supported by faculty recommendation). Preference will be given to students who intend to engage in full time studies. Proof of Registration for graduate studies in nursing or related discipline with an emphasis on nursing administration must be submitted to the Director within 3 years of graduation, before funds will be awarded.

Eligible Students: Graduating students in May and previous October.

 

Margaret Powell Scholarship ($500.00)

Criteria: This award is given to a member of the graduating class who intends to pursue further studies in a Master of Nursing Program. Candidates must apply in writing to the Undergraduate Studies Committee stating their intentions and why they are interested. A minimum academic average of 75% in all courses required for the BN (Collaborative) Program. Demonstrated clinical excellence. Proof of registration in a Master of Nursing Program, within 3 years of graduation, must be submitted to the Director before the funds will be awarded.

The Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland & Labrador Leadership in Nursing Award ($200)

The purpose of this award is to acknowledge a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated leadership in nursing throughout the program.

Criteria: Eligibility for this award is based on the following criteria: a minimum average* of 75% in the following nine courses: NURS3001, 3104, 3111, 3113, 3501, 3511, 4101, 4103, 4501. Pass in each of NURS4512, 4514, and 4110. Demonstrated leadership qualities such as the following: courage (takes risks), initiative (acts on ideas), energetic, ability to handle stress, self-awareness, articulate, communicator, optimistic, integrity (action matches words), challenges ideas/status quo, problem solver. 

*this average will establish initial eligibility only; it will not be used to decide the recipient of the award.

Be nominated for this award by: the graduating class and/or faculty member. The nomination must be supported by a statement or documentation of the nominee's history of leadership involvement that demonstrate the qualities outlined above while a student in the BN (Collaborative) Program.
