Forester’s Exhibit: Songs and Stories of the Forgotten Service

All are welcome to join Grenfell Campus for celebration of culture of men and women who made up the province’s forestry industry.

On Tues, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Arts and Science atrium, Grenfell Campus will host “Forester’s Exhibit: Songs and Stories of the Forgotten Service,” commemorating Newfoundland’s Forestry Corp in WWI and the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit in WWII.

“Dr. John Bodner and I over the years have separately been researching the history of Newfoundland and Labrador’s forestry industry with particular attention to work life,” said Dr. Rainer Baehre, historical studies professor, event co-organizer with Dr. Bodner, professor, social/cultural studies.  “These industries, especially pulp and paper which depended on the loggers, represented the leading economic sectors in Newfoundland during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.  They represent an often ignored part of Newfoundland’s identity and cultural legacy which this talk and exhibit are trying to recapture.”

An evening talk titled, “Mentioned In Song: A Salute to Our Lumbering and Logging Heritage,” will be presented by the Dr. Ursula Kelly, a university research professor with Memorial’s Faculty of Education, and Dr. Meghan Forsyth, assistant professor with the School of Music.

The evening will include recitations and stories performed by students in Grenfell’s theatre program and musical performances by Daniel Payne.  A tribute to the late Dr. John Ashton, Grenfell’s former vice-principal whose doctoral thesis on lumbering songs in Newfoundland is still regarded as pioneering, will also take place.

An accompanying six-panel exhibit- exploring the legacy of woods workers who served in the First and Second World War overseas units- created by Drs. Kelly and Forsyth, will remain on campus for four weeks following the event.

All are welcome to the event; light refreshments will be served.
