12-Week Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program at Memorial University of Newfoundland is a multi-skill program for students preparing for full-time university studies conducted in English, or who wish to improve their English communication skills for business or professional purposes. The program is designed for students from the low-intermediate to advanced levels.

Students may apply for provisional admission to Memorial at the same time as they apply for this program. Successful completion of the Intensive English Program together with an acceptable score on the test of English language proficiency given at the end of the program may allow students to finalize their admission to a university program.

The 22 to 25 hours per week program includes 13.5 to 15 hours of classes in academic reading, writing, and listening, and 8 to 10 hours of speaking and listening including presentation skills, special interest seminars on culture, literature, or business, pronunciation or conversation tutorials, and practice in our language lab.

Students in the Intensive English Program at Memorial University will benefit from the excellent library, computer services, and sports facilities on campus.

Intensive English Bridge Program
The Intensive English Bridge Program (IEBP) is intended for applicants to Memorial University of Newfoundland who have been provisionally admitted as undergraduate students and who are students in the advanced level of the Intensive English Program (IEP). It requires ten to fifteen hours of classroom language instruction in reading, writing, grammar, and listening. The emphasis is on English for Academic Purposes. Students in this program may register for an undergraduate credit course concurrently, in consultation with the Director of English as a Second Language Programs. Currently, accepted Bridge students may register for Linguistics 1100/2100.
Admission to the Bridge Program
Candidates for the Intensive English Bridge Program must have:
1. been provisionally accepted to undergraduate studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland;
2. achieved an average of Band 40 in the CAEL with a Writing sub-score of at least 40, a paper-based TOEFL score of 520, a
computer-based TOEFL score of 190, an iBT TOEFL score of 68 with a writing score of no less than 17, or an IELTS score of 5.5 with no sub-score less than 5 and a writing score of at least 5.5; and
3. achieved a grade of "C" or better with a satisfactory attendance level (90%) in both ENGS 011F and ENGS 012F if enrolled in the
Intensive English program in the previous semester.

How to Apply

There are three options for submitting the 12 Week ESL Program application:

  2. Print out the 12 Week ESL Program Application (PDF), complete it in and send it by regular mail to English as a Second Language Programs, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, NL, Canada, A1C 5S7
  3. Print out the 12 Week ESL Program Application (PDF), complete it in and fax to (709) 864-8282
  4. If you wish to be considered for the Bridge Program please attach a letter stating this and include an official copy of your IELTS, CAEL or TOEFL score. Institutional TOEFL scores are not acceptable.

Admission Requirements

You must have an intermediate level of English. You must be 18 years of age or older by the program starting date.

Students must arrange for Canadian visas. Visitors to Canada may take language courses for up to 6 months without a student visa (study permit) but may require a visitor permit. We recommend that all students obtain a study permit in case they wish to extend their stay longer than 6 months. Study permits cannot be obtain in Canada after arriving as a visitor.

1 Tuition fees may rise in January, 2016. A $400 deposit on tuition is required one month before the start of each semester. 

2 The application fee will be refunded only if we cannot accept a student into the program.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee admission. Please apply early.  The $400 deposit on tuition must be received four weeks before the start date of the program session. Allow 2 - 4 months to obtain any necessary visas. Admission to the Intensive English Program does not imply admission to any other Memorial University program. Students wishing to obtain provisional admission status at the university at the same time as they receive admission to the Intensive English Program should apply early, and notify the English as a Second Language Program office of their intention do so.
Candiates wishing to begin their program at the Bridge level must send official copies of English proficiency test scores before start date of the program and must clearly indicate that they wish to join the Bridge program. Bridge level classse have limited seats, so late applicants may be directed to the highest level of the regular Intensive English Program.

There are 3 options:

  • Traditional Dormitory: Paton College - Paton College has 10 houses, each with approximately 100 residents. Eight houses are co-ed and two houses are female only. Each residence building has 4 floors with 75% of the residents sharing a double room. Eligibility for single rooms will be determined by number of terms spent in Paton College and number of university credits. For current room charges see university calendar.   • Apartment-style residence: Burton's Pond Apartments - The Burton's Pond Apartments complex, located on the eastern end of Memorial University campus, houses 512 single students in four apartment buildings. One building of 15 apartments is designated for couples or single parent students. There are 4 single students' buildings. Each building has 3 floors with 11 four-bedroom apartments on each floor. Each apartment can accommodate 4 students, each of who has a private bedroom. Kitchen, living/dining room and bathroom are shared. All apartments are fully furnished. You must have completed a minimum of 10 university credit courses and be beyond first year of university study at your home university or at Memorial to be eligible. You must be 19 years of age.   • Off-campus Housing- The Off-Campus Housing Office has lists of apartments and houses to share offered by private persons. You should view the room or apartment before making a decision.


Medical Insurance

Students must have adequate medical insurance. The university health plan must be purchased at registration. (Cost is approximately $280 CAD for 4 calendar months)

Policy on Refunds

If for any reason we cannot accept a student into an ESL program, the application fee will be refunded. For students who are accepted into a program, the application fee is non-refundable. Seventy-five percent (75%) of tuition will be refunded to students who withdraw during the first two weeks of the program. No refunds can be made after that.

Payment of Program Fees

A $400 deposit on program tuition fees must be paid by 4 weeks prior to the start of classes. The remainder of the program fees must be paid by the first day of classes. Fees must be paid in Canadian dollars. Program fees are subject to change. Please verify at time of application.
