New dean for School of Pharmacy

After an extensive national search, Dr. Carlo Marra has been appointed as a professor and the new dean of the School of Pharmacy at Memorial University.

“I’m pleased to welcome Dr. Marra to Memorial,” said Dr. David Wardlaw, provost and vice-president (academic). “He is eager to join the school and offer his leadership and vision as the next dean and his knowledge and expertise as a teacher, researcher, and colleague.

"It is also a pleasure to thank Dr. Linda Hensman for her considerable contributions to advancing the school during her two terms as dean. Her commitment and dedication to the school and the university, and her consistent focus on students are valued by the Memorial community.”

Dr. Marra is currently a professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and director of the Collaboration for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) at University of British Columbia (UBC). He also holds a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Pharmaceutical Outcomes. After completing a bachelor of science in pharmacy at UBC, Dr. Marra received a doctor of pharmacy, and a doctor of philosophy in health care and epidemiology both also from UBC. 

Additionally, Dr. Marra completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada in Arthritis Epidemiology and Pharmacoepidemiology. 

During his career, Dr. Marra has received numerous awards including those from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, International Society of Quality of Life Research, Canadian Arthritis Network, Medical Research Council of Canada/Arthritis Society, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Dr. Marra’s research has mainly focused on health economics, quality of life research and pharmacoepidemiology. He has been published in more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and more than 100 other publications as well as presented at nearly 100 conferences.

The recommendation of the search committee for Dr. Marra’s appointment as a professor and dean was accepted by Dr. Gary Kachanoski, Memorial University’s president and vice-chancellor, and approved by the Board of Regents on Feb. 6, 2014. Dr. Marra’s appointment is effective June 1, 2014.
