SUBJECT: Helping Holyrood from seashore to sea floor

The Marine Institute is partnering with Tim Hortons and the Town of Holyrood for the second annual Two-Hour Tidy Land and Sea cleanup on Sunday, June 2.
The Town of Holyrood is hosting a two-hour cleanup of the town’s recreational areas, including parks, playgrounds, sports fields, marina and the main beach.
In addition to participating in the town’s on-land cleanup, Marine Institute volunteers will be cleaning up Holyrood harbour using their expertise in remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and a team of divers to retrieve items from the sea floor.
“The Marine Institute is proud to be a part of a thriving oceans-centric community that promotes the well-being of its residents and its environment," said Glenn Blackwood, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute). “We’re pleased that we can do our part to assist in taking care of our ocean environment in Holyrood Bay.”
“Council values the opportunity to work with our community partners, residents and visitors to ensure our town is clean," said Gary Goobie, mayor, Town of Holyrood. "With the growing concern of plastics in our oceans, it is incumbent on all of us to help create a wave of difference by choosing to rethink our use of plastics and to make an individual decision to take a meaningful role in reducing litter above and below the ocean.”
Registration for the Town of Holyrood cleanup starts at 9 a.m. at the Holyrood festival grounds. Participants will receive garbage bags, T-shirts, gloves and suggested locations to tidy.
Following the cleanup, there will be a free barbecue at 12 p.m. at the Holyrood festival grounds for participants.
