SUBJECT: Genesis, Cox & Palmer partner to empower tech startups

DATE: August 26, 2019

Genesis has announced a partnership with local law firm Cox & Palmer that will focus on their shared vision of empowering tech startups to achieve their full potential.

Cox & Palmer will offer Genesis startups complimentary legal consultation in areas that arise most frequently in startup enterprises. Genesis, Memorial University's innovation hub for technology startups, has always taken pride in surrounding its entrepreneurs with the best minds in the country. Connecting Genesis startups with Cox & Palmer’s alternative legal thinking startup practice group will enable the continuation of the practice.

Additionally, Cox & Palmer will provide financial support for Evolution, Genesis’ pre-incubation program for early stage tech entrepreneurs.

“We’re delighted to start this journey with Cox & Palmer,” said Michelle Simms, CEO, Genesis. “Our shared passion for empowering entrepreneurship in Newfoundland and Labrador has brought us together to better serve Genesis startups. Cox & Palmer embodies excellence in their craft and we can’t wait to see the entrepreneurial community grow.”

The collaboration will also broaden the Genesis community. Cox & Palmer has been an active proponent of innovation in the Atlantic Canadian region, supporting aspiring technology startups while also supporting industry partners like Volta in Nova Scotia and PropelICT in New Brunswick. This partnership will open the door for collaborative programming and opportunities to grow social capital in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Griff Roberts, a partner at Cox & Palmer's St. John’s office, leads the startups practice group.

“At Cox & Palmer, we believe that an entrepreneur with a great idea, vision and motivation can change the world, and Genesis companies are doing just that,” he said. “We look forward to continue working with the next generation of Newfoundland and Labrador businesses as they build solid foundations to compete on the local, national and international stages.”

With a proven track record, Genesis has supported companies in creating more than 1,700 jobs, secured $95 million in private investments and helped generate annual revenues exceeding $150 million. Through this partnership, both Genesis and Cox & Palmer will reinforce their commitment to high-quality service for startups in an effort to help advance their future growth and development.
