SUBJECT: Fisheries and Marine Institute hosts symposium on Northwest Atlantic redfish

What could sustainable Canadian commercial fisheries for redfish look like in the future?
To help answer the question, the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University is bringing together scientists from Canada and around the world, as well as fisheries managers, industry, Indigenous representatives and non-governmental organizations to participate in the Northwest Atlantic Redfish Symposium taking place Nov. 15-16.
Symposium participants will review and discuss the current scientific information on deep-water redfish populations in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. The symposium will also assist MI researchers in determining future research activities for redfish, including the design of fishing gear to limit catches of small redfish and bycatch.
Dr. Paul Winger, director of MI’s Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources, and Dr. Noel Cadigan, OCI Industrial Research Chair for Fish Stock Assessment, will be available to media from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, in MI’s main lobby on Ridge Road in St. John's.
The Northwest Atlantic Redfish Symposium is supported by the Ocean Frontier Institute, a partnership between Dalhousie University, Memorial University of Newfoundland and the University of Prince Edward Island. It is a collaborative research initiative to harness the vast potential of the world’s oceans. An international hub for ocean science, OFI brings together researchers and institutes from across the globe to understand our changing oceans and create safe, sustainable solutions for development.
