SUBJECT: PSA: Home is Here: Exhibit opening at Memorial University's Queen Elizabeth II Library

DATE: March 30, 2015

The Queen Elizabeth II Library at Memorial University is featuring a new exhibition curated by Emma Lang, a doctoral student with Memorial’s history department who also has a master of arts degree in museum studies and exhibition development from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Home is Here features 30 objects contributed by more than 24 students, faculty and staff.

Inspired by Ms. Lang’s own experiences as an international student at Memorial, the exhibit is designed to spark thought and discussion on the topic of campus diversity and our varied representations of home.

Chop sticks, a prayer mat and a photograph of an Oklahoma sunset are all part of the exhibit currently on display until April 30, on the main floor of the library. There are maps illustrating the geographical context of the exhibitors, as well as stories that accompany the donated objects. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to engage with the exhibit through an interactive discussion board.

“This is what I love to do,” said Ms. Lang. “There is nothing in the world that makes me happier than working on exhibits. People have a relationship with things that is really special, and really cool and really exciting. This seemed a very fun way to engage students in a very personal way.”
