SUBJECT: Pharmacy Research Innovation Day

DATE: March 17, 2015

To promote awareness of Memorial University’s School of Pharmacy’s research goals and as part of Pharmacist Awareness Month 2015, the school will host Pharmacy Research Innovation Day on Thursday, March 19.

From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. visitors will have the opportunity to peruse posters from undergraduate, graduate and faculty researchers in this booth-style showcase. The showcase takes place in the Health Sciences Centre’s main foyer.

From 12-1 p.m., three mini-presentations will be given in the Health Sciences Centre’s auditorium, highlighting the three strategic research focus areas and discussing how the expanding scope of pharmacy practice can help alleviate strains on our health-care system to create greater efficiency and sustainability.

Order of events:

12-12:20 p.m.: Research in the School of Pharmacy: The Strategic Path to Intensification

Dr. Carlo Marra (dean) will provide an overview of the research mission in the School of Pharmacy over the next 3-5 years.

12:20-12:40 p.m.: The Newfoundland and Labrador Bariatric Surgery Study: Health Outcomes

Dr. Laurie Twells will discuss obesity in Newfoundland and Labrador, bariatric surgery as a treatment for obesity, the bariatric surgery patient and post-surgery health outcomes.

12:40-1 p.m.: Thinking Critically in Pharmacy Education

Dr. John Hawboldt and co-investigator Dr. Beverly Fitzpatrick conducted an analysis of course objectives and classroom assessment in two therapeutics classes. They determined that insufficient critical thinking was being taught to and expected from the students. Consequently, changes were made and a current study is being conducted to improve students' critical thinking in therapeutics.

1-1:20 p.m.: Booze and Berries: Combining Health Outcomes and Drug Discovery Research

Dr. John Weber will discuss how the effects of ethanol exposure in adolescents affect their long-term motor function, and whether blueberries and partridgeberries can help protect brain function.
