SUBJECT: Havin' a ball for a great cause

When the 17th annual Nursing Charity Ball takes place at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s this weekend, Memorial University’s School of Nursing (SON) and the Centre for Nursing Studies (CNS) students will leave their sensible shoes at the door.
The annual event brings students, faculty, and staff together for a dance and silent auction that over the years has raised many thousands of dollars for community-based charities. It takes place on Saturday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m.
"The charity ball is a long-standing tradition in nursing school that allows students from the School of Nursing and the Centre for Nursing Studies to collaborate and create a night for students, faculty, special guests and friends to enjoy," said Katie Luther, a third-year SON student who co-ordinated the event with Aimee O'Keefe from the CNS.
"Most importantly this event enables us as students to give back to our community and support a charity in need."
This year the students are donating all proceeds from the ball, and from many fundraisers leading up to the event, to the YWCA, which supports women through a variety of programs.
"The YWCA’s vision is to create a community where all girls and women feel safe, supported and empowered," said Ms. Luther.
The YWCA's programs and services focus on assisting girls and women to access resources and opportunities to help them shape their own lives. Programs and services are developed, implemented and evaluated from a framework that reflects the YWCA core values: equality, diversity, collaboration, respect, trust, and balance.
Funds raised at the ball are donated to support a different organization each year. In past years, funds raised have been donated to groups such as Street Reach, Planned Parenthood, the SPCA and many others.
The annual Nursing Charity Ball caps off a week of special Nursing Spirit Week activities, and also features the awarding of the popular Nightingale Cup. The cup is presented to the class that earns the highest number of points earned over a week of special events.
