SUBJECT: Upcoming Memorial Presents to explore if the places we live, study, work and play are making us sick

Memorial University’s Leslie Harris Centre for Regional Policy and Development will host a Memorial Presents public forum this coming Monday, Oct. 28, to discuss how our built environments impact our health.
We know that lifestyle choices like healthy eating and being active play an important role in preventing chronic disease. But there is an increasing body of evidence that shows that the places where we live, study, work and play – our built environments – also have a significant impact on our health.
The Harris Centre has assembled an expert panel, including Dr. Karen Lee, senior Adviser to the Built Environment and Healthy Housing Program at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and adjunct professor at the schools of public health at the University of Toronto and the University of Alberta, and Dr. Catherine Donovan, associate professor of public health at Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine and chair of the Provincial Wellness Advisory Council, to discuss how our built environments can support or hinder healthy choices.
The presentations will discuss how architecture and urban design can influence our levels of physical activity, our access to healthy foods and how we connect socially, what architectural or design innovations can help us leave our cars at home, if better designed neighborhoods can help us reduce the ballooning costs of health care; and how communities in Newfoundland and Labrador can improve their built environments to support healthy choices, improve the natural environment and benefit the economy.
The event takes place from 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Innovation Hall, Bruneau Centre for Innovation and Research, on Memorial’s St. John’s campus.
Admission and parking are free. A reception will follow.
