SUBJECT: Media and stakeholder information session on new approach for regional and economic success of Atlantic Canadian communities

Research from Memorial University’s Harris Centre suggests that a change in the traditional approach to regional planning and development may enhance economic success for communities and regions across Atlantic Canada.
The work provides five broad categories of functional economic regions, with varying levels of economic capacity.
Drs. David Freshwater and Alvin Simms will explain how they used quantitative data and geo-spatial modelling to create a new way of organizing regions in Atlantic Canada based on commuting patterns, economic indicators and population, rather than the traditional method of organizing regions by proximity alone.
This shift in thinking may have significant policy implications, both in terms of funding and planning. It will be a useful tool in understanding labour market issues, industry planning and community sustainability.
An information session for media and stakeholders will be held at Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, 460 Torbay Rd, St. John's, on Tuesday, June 10, at 10:30 a.m.
