SUBJECT: Harris Centre heading to Northern Peninsula to explore opportunities and challenges in the region

Memorial University’s Harris Centre is preparing for a regional workshop in St. Anthony on the Great Northern Peninsula.
Memorial students, staff and faculty will meet with local people to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the Northern Peninsula region. The ultimate goal is to create partnerships that lead to further research and work on the ideas generated at the session.
The workshop, which will take place on Friday, Dec. 6, from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., has been organized in collaboration with local representatives. The committee has identified three themes for the workshop:
- Assessing and advancing local infrastructure: What is the status of current infrastructure (transportation, communications, drinking water, marine, health, education, recreation, etc.)? What knowledge and resources are needed to sustain and advance community and regional infrastructure into the future?
- Promoting regional collaboration: How can separate communities work together to plan and share resources for the benefit of the region? Can communities further co-operate in the planning and delivery of services? Are there more ways to build capacity on a regional, rath…er than community, level?
- Fostering business development and entrepreneurship: What is the role of business in the region, and how can individuals invest in ventures that will create benefits for themselves as well as others? What are examples of successful businesses, and what opportunities exist in various sectors? How can entrepreneurship be encouraged?
The morning session will be dedicated to sharing the research that Memorial is currently doing in the region. The afternoon session will delve deeper into the three topics selected by the organizing group. Participants will break into three groups to discuss challenges and suggest possible areas for further research, teaching and public engagement. It will be an opportunity for the members of the region to help shape the work that happens at Memorial, so everyone is encouraged to share their input and ideas.
As part of the trip, a Memorial Presents public forum on entrepreneurship will be held on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 7-9 p.m. Dr. Jose Lam, professor of business at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus, will present Open for Business: The Role of Entrepreneurial Culture in Transforming Communities. The session will focus on how small- and medium-sized businesses contribute to the livelihood of communities across the province by providing products, services, tax revenue and employment to the region. A panel discussion with local representatives will follow the presentation. All members of the public, including those not attending the workshop, are invited to attend the Memorial Presents.
