News Release

REF NO.: 103

SUBJECT: Newfoundland Quarterly rejoins Memorial University as public engagement unit

DATE: April 1, 2013

As of April 1, Newfoundland and Labrador’s oldest magazine, the Newfoundland Quarterly, will officially become a public engagement unit of Memorial University.
The change will fully integrate the Newfoundland Quarterly into the university’s administrative structure and allow the publication to take direct advantage of Memorial’s resources while maintaining its editorial independence and century-long commitment to the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. The publication will also become one of several units that report to the Office of Public Engagement.
“The transition will allow us the stability to make strategic plans for the future, both short- and long-term,” said Joan Sullivan, managing editor. “Memorial has owned the journal since the 1980s – this new, closer relationship is an extension of the successful collaboration that we’ve built in the decades since then.”
The transition will also include the expansion of the publication’s editorial board, providing suggestions and support to the independent editor of the Newfoundland Quarterly. According to Ms. Sullivan, there will be no interruption in its publishing schedule or in the publication’s tone or content.
“The Newfoundland Quarterly is not an academic journal – it’s a cultural one,” she said. “We’re looking forward to the continued development and growth of the Quarterly in our new partnership with Memorial.”
