News Release

REF NO.: 125

SUBJECT: Memorial University to hold spring convocation ceremonies in St. John’s

DATE: May 27, 2013

Memorial University is holding spring convocation ceremonies this week. Almost 2,400 degrees will be awarded to graduating Memorial University students during nine sessions of convocation from May 28-31 at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre. Grenfell Campus held the first session of convocation at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook May 10.
During the first of the St. John’s sessions, Memorial’s new chancellor will be ceremonially installed. Dr. Susan Dyer Knight was named the university’s seventh chancellor last fall.
She succeeded Gen. Rick Hillier as chancellor, who will receive an honorary degree during spring convocation. Gen. Hillier will be joined by five other outstanding citizens who will also be recognized with an honorary doctorate: theatre director Barbara Barrett, humanitarian Susan Patten, Canadian Cancer Society volunteer Margot Reid, businessman and philanthropist Joseph Rotman and former chair of Memorial’s Board of Regents Robert Simmonds.
For his contribution to music on Newfoundland’s west coast, Gary Graham received an honorary doctor of laws during convocation in Corner Brook.
Honorary degree recipients are chosen from among nominations submitted by the public to the Senate, the university’s academic governing body, after a careful examination of the grounds for their nomination. The honorary doctorate degree is designed to recognize extraordinary contribution to society or the university or exceptional intellectual or artistic achievement.
Dr. Gary Kachanoski, Memorial’s president and vice-chancellor, will address all nine sessions of convocation in St. John’s and be joined by other members of Memorial’s senior administration who will speak at various ceremonies.

Memorial’s spring convocation is also being broadcast live on the Internet. The broadcast will be available for viewing at www.mun.ca during each convocation session and archived on the convocation website for future viewing.
