News Release

REF NO.: 79

SUBJECT: Memorial University launches new Public Engagement Framework with week of events and activities

DATE: February 12, 2013

Memorial University is pleased to announce the next chapter in a long tradition of public engagement, with the official launch of the new Public Engagement Framework.
Developed through a provincewide consultation process, the framework underscores public engagement as a core priority, aligning Memorial’s existing public engagement activities and celebrating public engagement successes across the university.
“The framework emphasizes Memorial’s role as a leader in university public engagement,” said Dr. Gary Kachanoski, Memorial’s president and vice-chancellor. “Memorial fulfills a special obligation to the people of this province, and this framework provides the blueprint that will help our students, faculty and staff to better engage with the public, and vice versa.”
During the consultation process for the development of the framework, participants from Memorial and the public exhibited a healthy taste for debate. From questions about what constitutes public engagement to ideas about its role in Memorial’s academic mandate, very few stones had been left unturned by the end of the process.
“We spoke with almost a thousand people, all said and done,” said Dr. Rob Greenwood, executive director, Office of Public Engagement at Memorial. “They shared their knowledge, opinions and experiences, all of which contributed to the final document.”
The result is a document that addresses a broad range of issues, from big-picture concepts, to the day-to-day practise of public engagement. The framework offers a long-term vision, values, goals and tangible objectives for Memorial students, faculty and staff to work towards individually and from an administrative and strategic perspective. The framework will also guide the activities of Memorial’s Office of Public Engagement as it works with internal and external groups to support and co-ordinate implementation of the framework.
To celebrate the official launch of the framework, everyone, from Memorial and the public, is invited to participate in Engage Memorial, a week-long celebration of public engagement at Memorial, running Feb.12-15, many of which will be webcast live or recorded and posted to the website for provincial use.

About Memorial University’s Public Engagement Framework:
Memorial’s Public Engagement Framework confirms public engagement as a core priority at Memorial, as emphasized in the university’s mission. As the framework states, Memorial University’s vision is to be a world leader as an engaged public university through our special obligation to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Building on a long history of collaboration and partnerships outside the university, the framework will help bring alignment to Memorial’s existing public engagement activities, supporting and celebrating public engagement successes from across the university and strengthening and increasing opportunities for collaboration with the public of this province, Canada and the world.
