SUBJECT: Sixth annual Engineering Charity Ball at Johnson GEO CENTRE

A three-course gourmet meal, live entertainment and a silent auction are all on tap for the sixth annual Engineering Charity Ball on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Johnson GEO CENTRE in St. John’s.
The event is organized by the Undergraduate Student Society A from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University. All proceeds from the event go to charity, with the St. John’s R.E.A.L. Program having been chosen as the beneficiary of this year’s charity ball.
“We are pleased to see our engineering students continue to work hard to support the community they live in,” said Dr. Ramachandran Venkatesan, dean pro tempore, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. “Our engineering societies organize a number of fundraisers for charity each year, including raising money for the Janeway Children’s Hospital.
“This is a team of bright, determined and caring individuals who are dedicated to helping valuable organizations such as the St. John’s R.E.A.L. Program. On behalf of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, I applaud their efforts and encourage others to contribute to the charity ball in some way.”
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will consist of a reception and a silent auction. Live entertainment will be provided by some of the Memorial University School of Music’s most talented young musicians, while the meal will be prepared by Red Oak Catering.
The silent auction consists of items donated to the charity ball by individuals, companies and organizations. Guests are invited to place bids on a variety of articles throughout the evening. The highest bidder on each item will be announced at the end of the night, with guests able to take their prizes home immediately after.
“By donating items to the silent auction, businesses are provided with an opportunity to spread the word about their company while at the same time giving back to the community,” said Jane Casey, vice-president, corporate relations, Engineering Undergraduate Society A. “Professionals attending this event will have a chance to meet students who are enthusiastic about engineering and ready to enter the field while students in attendance will have the opportunity to meet a number of professional engineers with several years of experience and expertise they can share.”
Monetary donations and auction items are currently being accepted by Engineering Undergraduate Student Society A. Individual tickets for the event can be purchased for $50 and a table can be secured for $400. According to Ms. Casey, a donation of any size or form is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use by the St. John’s R.E.A.L. Program.
“The R.E.A.L Program aims to provide all children and youth in the City of St. John’s with the opportunity to register in recreation and leisure activities by providing the financial assistance required,” she explained. “Allowing the children and youth in our community to participate in any extracurricular activity helps to boost their self-esteem, promote healthy living and support personal growth through increased knowledge and skill development. With the support we are receiving for the charity ball, we hope to make this possible for even more deserving children and youth in our community.”
