SUBJECT: Naval cadets graduate from Memorial University’s Marine Institute

The Canadian Navy and the Marine Institute will celebrate tomorrow as 14 new marine engineering technicians will be welcomed into the ranks as they graduate from the Marine Engineering Technician Training Plan (METTP) program.
The graduation will take place at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 10, at the Canadian Forces Station St. John’s Drill Hall in Pleasantville.
Attending the graduation ceremony will be Capt. Simon Page, director of Maritime Training; Cmdr. David Benoit, commandant of the Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School; and Detachment Cmdr. Alan Brown.
This province continues its strong representation in the Navy with six Newfoundlanders and Labradorians heading to the fleet. The graduates will be stationed in Halifax, N.S., or Esquimalt, B. C., and employed as marine engineering technicians.
The five-year Marine Engineering Technician Training Plan (METTP) is a cooperative venture between the Royal Canadian Navy and the Marine Institute. The first two years are spent studying to be marine engineering technicians at the Marine Institute campus in St. John’s. Upon graduating from the two-year diploma course, the naval cadets advance to full-time careers within the Royal Canadian Navy, serving for at least the next three years.
The relationship between Department of National Defence and the Marine Institute has been an enormous success for both organizations since its establishment in 1992. With each passing year, more and more naval trainees complete their technical training at the institute and continue on to successful careers in the Navy. On average, about 100 naval trainees are studying at the Marine Institute throughout the year.
