Note to editors:

The launch of the Newfoundland and Labrador Thrombosis, Blood and Immune Disorders Project will take place Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Johnson GEO CENTRE in St. John’s. Keynote speaker, Dr. Karen Yee of the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, will speak on acute leukemia in adults.
Disorders of the blood and immune system affect a high proportion of the population of Newfoundland and Labrador. Cancers of the blood and immune system account for 20 per cent of cancer patients in the province. In 2011 there has also been an increasing incidence of cancer, diabetes mellitus, stroke, heart disease, blood clots and anemia.
The NL Thrombosis, Blood and Immunology Research and Education Project is designed to promote and develop education and research to address these challenges.
The launch features a number of guest speakers and time for questions. Dr. David Barnes, of CSL Behring, will talk about developing new therapies for rare disorders. Hematologist Dr. Mary-Frances Scully will give an overview of the NL Thrombosis, Blood and Immune Disorders Project. Corinne Humby will talk about patient navigators – a new approach to cancer care. And Charlie Cheeseman will provice a patient’s perspective.
The evening will conclude with refreshments and a panel available to answer questions.
