News Release

REF NO.: 8

SUBJECT: DELTS brightens its website complexion

DATE: September 14, 2011

Memorial’s Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS) has given its website a fresh new face.
While DELTS’ Memorial@Home brand is well known across campuses as the university’s distance and online education provider, the unit also provides support for classroom technologies and redesigns classrooms across campus, provides faculty training, graduate student professional development and mentorship, as well as instructor and student technical support for distance courses and on-campus courses with an online component.
The website’s model follows the unit’s 2011-18 Strategic Plan, which included a unit name change – going from Distance Education and Learning Technologies (DELT) to Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS).
“The name change, and subsequently our new website, better reflect the various teaching and learning support services that we offer,” said Rob Wells, acting director of DELTS. “These services encompass relevant pedagogical assistance to faculty, training and professional development on current issues, teaching dossier support, effective classroom design and support, media services, technology-enabled learning support, and a general focus on student engagement.”
The website’s new colourful appearance is part of the scrubbed up, more youthful and contemporary persona of other revamped sites at Memorial, including the Faculty of Science, the Department of Earth Sciences, and the School of Nursing.
Mr. Wells added that showcasing DELTS’ video and multimedia capabilities was a core part of the planning process for the new site.
“We have state-of-the-art facilities and talent in this unit that reflects the growing importance of online learning to post-secondary and K-12 education. That provides for a creative, dynamic, collaborative work environment for faculty, staff and students, and also allows us to share our work and collaborate with other faculties and schools at Memorial, and also with external community organizations, in order to reuse learning resources among educators at Memorial and other educational institutions both nationally and internationally.” he said. “So we wanted to make sure all of that came through in our online personality and in the face we show to the world.”
