SUBJECT: American ambassador visits Memorial to commemorate 10th anniversary of 9/11

The U.S. ambassador to Canada will participate in a special ceremony on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.
David Jacobson will take part in the ceremony at 8 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 11, in the atrium of the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation (formerly the Inco building).
Memorial Chancellor General Rick Hillier (ret’d) will be in attendance to introduce Mr. Jacobson. The ambassador will not only acknowledge Memorial’s role during the aftermath of the attacks, but the many other organizations – the local area Salvation Army, airport, government employees, schools and aid organizations to name a few – that worked tirelessly to assist those in need in the days after 75 international flights were re-routed to provincial airports.
Ambassador Jacobson will also present a plaque to St. John’s city councillor Frank Galgay to recognize the citizens of St. John’s for their numerous acts of kindness during that time.
During the ceremony, Salvation Army Major Lloyd George will lead a prayer and a moment of silence to remember the victims of the attacks. Maj. George volunteered at Ground Zero in New York for two weeks in December 2001.
Memorial Vice-President (Academic) Dr. David Wardlaw will act as host for the event.
