SUBJECT: PSA: Speaking of Engineering lecture to provide an overview of Ghana and the role that an academic institution plays in its extractive industry

On Wednesday, April 20, 2011, Professor Newton Amegbey, dean of the Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology at the University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa, Ghana, will be in St. John’s to talk about Ghana and the role of the University of Mines and Technology.
A major oil discovery off the coast of Ghana in 2007 has led to significant international commercial interest in Ghana and an encouraging expectation of a major economic boost. According to industry data, Ghana is likely to be the third largest producer of oil in West Africa within five years.
Prof. Amegbey will provide an overview of Ghana and its mineral endowment including the new oil find and how the University of Mines and Technology is strategizing to play its role effectively and efficiently.
This Speaking of Engineering lecture series, hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University and the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 7:30 p.m., in the S. J. Carew Engineering Building’s Angus Bruneau Engineering Lecture Theatre, room EN-2006, on Memorial’s St. John’s campus. Admission is free. Parking is available in Lot 16. All are welcome. Reception will follow.
