SUBJECT: MI Ocean Net hosts cleanup of Freshwater Bay area

DATE: October 7, 2010

The Marine Institute’s MI Ocean Net will partner with volunteers from Molson-Coors and the City of St. John’s to host a cleanup of the Freshwater Bay area of the East Coast Trail’s Deadmans Bay Path on Friday, Oct. 8. The media is welcome to attend the event.
“This area sees a lot of traffic and suffers from a lot of litter, fire pits, broken glass and ocean debris,” said Justin Dearing, conference coordinator, MI Ocean Net. “In addition to the volunteers from the City of St. John’s and Molson-Coors, we also encourage volunteers from the community to join us in cleaning this area. We will hike 30 minutes down to the beach, clean up, eat lunch and then bring the garbage up to the parking lot. All volunteers will receive free Friends of Beaches t-shirts made from 100 percent organic cotton and bamboo.”
The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with a MI Ocean Net slideshow and discussion at the Molson-Coors brewery, covering topics such as cleanup efforts of volunteers from MI Ocean Net’s Friends of Beaches Network, the impact of garbage and ocean debris and what can be done to make a difference before travelling to a cleanup site.
At 9:30 a.m. the volunteers from Molson-Coors leave for the cleanup, and at 10:15 a.m. they will meet with community volunteers before hiking down to the beach.
Community volunteers can join the cleanup by meeting the main group at the parking lot on Blackhead Road. The parking lot is on the left, two to five minutes after exiting Shea Heights. A number of cars will be parked in the lot and there will also be a large white sign placed there to help community volunteers follow the group from Molson-Coors.
The beach cleanup is expected to start at 10:45 a.m., followed by lunch at 12 p.m. At 1:15 p.m. all volunteers will carry the collected garbage back to the road, where the City of St. John’s will handle the pickup of the garbage.
All volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy footwear, pack a lunch, bring water and wear appropriate clothing in case of changing weather conditions. Gloves and bags will be provided
