SUBJECT: Memorial’s Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS) names acting director

The Board of Regents of Memorial University has approved the appointment of Robert Wells as acting director for Memorial University’s Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS) department until a permanent replacement has been selected.
Mr. Wells joined the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Technology (now the Marine Institute) in 1986, and was responsible for a wide range of IT initiatives, including the administrative and academic computing requirements of the institution and the introduction of educational technologies in support of the delivery of its programs.
Since 2007, Mr. Wells served as associate director of DELTS, where he led the design and technical operations of the unit, including course development, video production, multimedia services, classroom technologies and IT technologies. He is a member of Memorial’s Information Management Committee (IMC) and chairs its Core Infrastructure and Operations Subcommittee. 
Over the past four years Mr. Wells has led the recapitalization of the unit’s video production facility, including the implementation of a fully digital, HD- compatible facility, chaired a university-wide committee that established a standard for personal response systems (clicker technology), implemented a number of emerging technologies platforms in support of teaching and learning, including blogging and wiki services, and lecture capture facilities.
Mr. Wells holds a B.Sc. (Honours) in Computer Science and a M.Ed., Information Technology from Memorial.

The appointment was effective Aug. 1, 2011.
