SUBJECT: Memorial University represented at Department of Trade, Innovation and Development’s Export and Innovation Awards

Memorial was well-represented at the provincial department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development’s 2010 Export and Innovation Awards, which was held on Nov. 24 at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s.
Distance Education and Learning Technologies (DELT) was this year’s winner in the Distinction in Innovation category, and shared the honour with fellow Memorial co-nominees, the Journal of Ocean Technology published by the Fisheries and Marine Institute and SIFE Memorial – a not-for-profit organization of post-secondary students aiming to infuse an entrepreneurial spirit while creating economic opportunity in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Ann Marie Vaughan, DELT director, said she was grateful to be honoured with Memorial colleagues.
“What sets Memorial and DELT apart from other universities in Canada is not the technology alone – it is the people who work in DELT and come to every challenge as an opportunity,” she said during her acceptance speech. “Their creativity and the value of working with a multitude of partners public and private, local and international, including the Town of Cupids and community of Conne River, Marine Institute International, CDLI and College of the North Atlantic, Desire2Learn and Quality Matters. This coupled with our reach that extends throughout Canada into Africa and the West Indies provides a collective approach through partnership that makes innovation happen. We are most grateful to the provincial government for continuous support and we are honoured to receive this award.”
The Distinction in Innovation Award distinguishes an individual or group that has taken a leadership role in advancing Newfoundland and Labrador’s innovative culture and creating new opportunities for industry.
DELT works in coordination with Memorial’s various faculties and schools to provide more varied and flexible programs online, especially in the professional disciplines, in both urban and rural areas of the province.
The unit’s adoption of a province-wide learning management system (LMS) in partnership with the College of the North Atlantic and the provincial Department of Education’s Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation (K-12 based), allows for a common learning platform in communities and homes throughout the province.
Also core to DELT’s operations and strategic growth are external development projects with the public and private sector. These projects are diversified in purpose with an educational focus and include the use of technology for the enhancement of training and learning.
The unit has received over 13 national and international awards in 2010 alone in the areas of marketing, institutional achievement, collaboration, and public service to the field of distance education and teaching and learning support.
