DATE: September 9, 2010

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans’ Association will host a special ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 12, to honour the 13th anniversary of the unveiling of a Merchant Navy Memorial at MI. The ceremony starts at 10:50 a.m. at the Marine Institute campus on Ridge Road and the media is invited to attend.
The ceremony is hosted by Capt. J.J. Strong and will include greetings from John Crosbie, Lt-Gov. of Newfoundland and Labrador; Bob Ridgley, parliamentary assistant to the premier, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador; Shannie Duff, deputy mayor, City of St. John’s; Dr. Reeta Tremblay, vice- president (academic), Memorial University; Bruce Ferguson, national president, Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans’ Association; and Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute.
Following the ceremony, a reception will be held in the Marine Institute gymnasium.
The Merchant Navy Memorial was unveiled at the Marine Institute on
Aug. 29, 1997, to celebrate the Merchant Navy veterans who served on Canadian, British and Allied merchant ships during the Second World War.
More than 330 Newfoundland Merchant seamen, including one woman, lost their lives during the war. All 333 names are included on the Marine Institute’s Merchant Navy Memorial.
This year’s ceremony at MI coincides with the Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association 2010 Reunion and Annual General Meeting taking place in St. John’s, marking the first time these events have been hosted in this province.
Merchant Navy Veterans Day is celebrated on Sept. 3 of each year throughout Canada and other Commonwealth nations. To honor the dedication of the Merchant Navy memorial and to commemorate Merchant Navy Veterans Day, Sept. 12 was chosen for this year’s Marine Institute memorial ceremony.
