With another school year in full swing, the challenges of teacher education will be the focus of a public forum set to take place in St. John’s in mid October.
Memorial University’s Harris Centre is hosting the free discussion titled Teacher Education in Canada: The Issues and Challenges, which will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel.
Dr. Robert Crocker, a professor emeritus from Memorial’s Faculty of Education, will lead the discussion. Dr. Crocker has extensive international experience in education, as an academic, a senior government official, and a consultant. He will describe current teacher education programs in Canada and compare these with the expectations of principals, new teachers and faculty.
Dr. Crocker will be accompanied by two eminent panelists: Dr. Bruce Sheppard, a professor from Memorial’s Faculty of Education, and Dr. Clare Kosnik, an associate professor and head of the Centre for Teacher Education and Development at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
“Teachers are key resources in society. We need great teachers to motivate and to educate our children and young adults, and to prepare them to face an ever-more complex world,” said Michael Clair, associate director for public policy at the Harris Centre. “But how well are we preparing our teachers? Are we doing a good enough job in preparing them for the challenges of the classroom and to meet the needs of society? These are some of the questions we’ll address.”
The forum is open to the public, who will have an opportunity to engage the presenters in a moderated discussion session. Admission is free, and a reception will follow.
The event will be webcast live at www.mun.ca/harriscentre and viewers will be able to submit questions or comments by e-mail during the webcast.
The forum is part of the Edge Conference: Inspiration and Innovation in Teaching and Teacher Education, an international conference organized by Memorial University’s Faculty of Education which is taking place Oct. 14-16 in St. John’s.
The conference features presenters and attendees from 11 countries around the globe, including the U.K., U.S., India, Uganda, Nigeria, Israel, as well as representatives from all 10 provinces in Canada and 10 U.S. states.
Edge 2009 is of interest to teachers, school administrators, government officials, post-secondary teachers and administrators, and interested members of the public.
