When was the last time you set aside all your responsibilities and obligations and did something for yourself?

If you can’t remember, you’re a prime candidate for a new suite of programs being introduced this fall by Grenfell College’s Division of Community Education and College Relations.

“Be Here Now” will be particularly beneficial for those of us who don’t have time to focus on our immediate present.

“Many of us spend much of our time focused either on the past or on the future, paying little attention to what is happening in the present,” said Marilyn Forward, program developer with Community Education. “Mindfulness is the practice of staying in the moment.”

Be Here Now is a course developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, who used the technique with people suffering from a wide range of medical problems, ranging from chronic pain to cancer and heart disease. Research demonstrated that their overall quality of life was significantly improved.

Be Here Now, facilitated by Dr. Michael Newton on Oct. 27, Nov. 3, 10 and 17, 7 to 9:30 p.m., will teach you to use the concepts of ‘mindfulness’ to handle your moods and emotions and to take better care of your overall well-being. You will practice how to overcome pre-occupation so that you can see clearly what is happening in the present and as a result, disentangling yourself from habitual reactions.

For those women who are often entangled in the web of family finances, Community Education is offering Women and Wealth. This program will show women that a solid financial plan is essential to balance a career, family duties and social obligations. During this course, women will look at various elements to consider when creating financial plans, including net worth, tax planning, pensions and benefits, investment planning, retirement income planning, risk management and estate planning. This course is facilitated by Paula Butt on Oct. 6 and 13, 7-9:30 p.m.

Or how about learning a new language? Intro to Mandarin with instructor Lan Ma will teach you simple conversational skills in Mandarin. You’ll also become familiar with the Chinese culture while acquiring the basics of the language. Intro to Mandarin is offered on six Wednesdays from Oct. 7 to Nov. 18, 7-9:30 p.m.
