Dr. Lilly Walker has been recognized by her peers across the country for her contribution to student affairs.
At the recent annual conference for the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS), Dr. Walker, dean of Student Affairs and Services at Memorial, received the organization’s highest award.
The CACUSS Award of Honour is given to the member with the greatest level of involvement in the association, distinguished through their contribution to the development and promotion of student services.
Mere weeks before receiving the CACUSS award in Edmonton, Dr. Walker was recognized with the AACUSS Award of Merit, the highest honour of the Atlantic Association of Colleges and Universities Student Service.
The AACUSS Award of Merit is similarly based on significant achievement and distinguished contribution to the development and promotion of Student Services in the Atlantic Region and active participation within the association itself.
These awards recognize Dr. Walker’s leadership in student affairs throughout her career, and are particularly reflective of her stewardship of student services at Memorial University.
Dr. Walker has served as dean of Student Affairs and Services at Memorial for 10 years and as chief student affairs officer on the AACUSS executive. She concludes her term as dean on July 31, 2010.
Her Memorial colleagues said she is truly deserving of these honours.
“Since moving to the east coast a decade ago to join us here at Memorial University, Lilly has been an outstanding member and supporter of AACUSS,” said Christine Burke, director of Housing, Food and Conference Services. “As the dean of Student Affairs and Services, Lilly has been the embodiment of the mandate of AACUSS. No chief student affairs officer would exist if it was not for our students, and Lilly has made the students her life’s work.”
Ms. Burke said that, as an academic, Dr. Walker has distinguished herself in the areas of student development and student leadership, including having authored a text on the subject.
“Lilly has also demonstrated an outstanding ability to translate the theory of student development into practice. An energetic and dynamic presence at every student event, Lilly has always encouraged students to give their very best,” Ms. Burke said.
Jennifer Browne, director of Career Development and Experiential Learning at Memorial, said Dr. Walker’s commitment to student affairs and services has been informed by more than 25 years of experience. This experience has resulted in a student services organization that has achieved national recognition, garnered respect from colleagues and created innovative leading edge programs.
“An articulate passionate voice for students and an individual who understands the complexities of the wide-ranging responsibilities of the student services portfolio, Lilly has devoted uncountable hours and energy to the well-being of students, her staff and the field of student affairs,” said Ms. Browne. “She has supported the organizations, both regionally and nationally, that support the professional development and the dissemination of students affairs research and best practices.”
