SUBJECT: Memorial University launches video stories from distance education students

Memorial University’s Distance Education and Learning Technologies (DELT) has launched a website with video stories from a selection of their students. The site highlights students who have pursued a university education despite various challenges including location, lifestyle and time constraints.
The students featured are located across Newfoundland and Labrador, and are enrolled in a variety of Memorial’s programs that are available through distance education.
“The stories are inspiring – these students have taken their lives in their own hands and pursued their academic goals despite various challenges or constraints,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, director of DELT. “Being able to learn at a distance has given them the ability to stay with their families, work in their communities, and contribute to the social, cultural and economic fabric of where they live. And it’s rewarding to hear directly from these students the value distance education has brought to their lives.”
The stories on the site represent only a cross-section of the people and places that are impacted by distance learning at Memorial. The institution currently has more than 500 distance education examination sites in Newfoundland and Labrador alone.
This academic year marks 40 years of credit-based distance education at Memorial, over which time the university has worked to increase access and enhance the delivery of post-secondary education in the province. DELT has recently been able to fast-track course development thanks to a targeted investment from the provincial government toward distance education courses and programs. The funding assisted the university in responding to the needs of students, particularly mature learners and those who reside in rural communities.
