SUBJECT: Memorial University hosts collaborative lecture for World Refugee Day

In honour of World Refugee Day, the History Department of Memorial University, in partnership with the Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council (RIAC), will be hosting a collaborative lecture on refugee issues in Canada on Sunday, June 20.
“This is a great chance to see who is doing research and who is interested in the issues that face refugees in Canada today,” said José Rivera, executive director of RIAC. “The ASPECTS lecture is an effort to connect research and connect people, and to generate awareness about all sides of the refugee experience.”
Guest presenters include Dr. Robert Sweeny, Department of History, speaking on The History of Refugee Laws and Inequality in Canada; Cara Lewis, Planned Parenthood Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Health Centre, speaking on LBGTQ Issues and the Immigration and Refugee Board; Benoit Mukendi, speaking on Experiences in a Refugee Camp; and a speaker from the Memorial Medicine Gateway Project.
This event is generously funded by the Provincial Government Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism, Human Resources, Labour and Employment. All are invited to attend the reception following the lecture.
The Department of History is partnering with RIAC, a non-profit organization that provides advice, support and settlement services to immigrants and refugees. RIAC promotes public awareness of refugee and immigrant issues through the active involvement of the community.
The lecture will take place on June 20 from 5-7 p.m. in room AA-1046 of the Arts and Administration Building.
